President’s Message – Bryan Jao

Dear colleagues:

It has been a great pleasure to serve as president of Michigan Presenters during the past three years. In that time, I have been fortunate to forge lifelong relationships with many of you, share our stories of challenges and successes and to find inspiration in it all.

Now, it is time for me to step aside and to allow another to share his or her vision in propelling Michigan Presenters forward. I sincerely thank you for the opportunity for allowing me to serve in this capacity and appreciate your faith in my abilities.

I encourage each of you to consider serving as an officer as it is extremely rewarding on so many different levels. There are countless ways in which serving our membership has been fulfilling both personally and professionally. Conversations with presenters, associations, agents and managers have been made deeper because of it. Consideration of how to benefit our membership has allowed me to think more broadly about our industry and our communities in Michigan.

I look forward to continuing to work with each of you and the new leadership of Michigan Presenters in advancing the organization as immediate past president. Once again, thank you for your camaraderie and for the inspiration these past three years as it has been an honor. I hope you can join us in East Lansing at our next meeting.

Yours truly,
D. Bryan Jao
President, Michigan Presenters

Re: Proposal: “Great Lakes Presenters”
Over the past two years, an idea of the “Great Lakes Presenters” has been a topic discussed among neighboring state consortia as a way to combine resources in order to bring greater opportunity among neighboring states. While initial discussions have been relatively broad in scope, the idea has been brought to the forefront by our colleagues at the Ohio Arts Presenters Network and the idea has come steps closer to a reality.

This exploratory discussion will inform members of Michigan Presenters of the information we currently have with regards to this proposal and weigh the pros and cons of this opportunity.

Below are some initial points for consideration indicating the importance and possible effects of this proposal:
–          Ohio, Indiana and Michigan would fold into a single organization
–          Each state would have representation on the Board
–          Annual Conference location would rotate each year
–          Likely change in membership dues structure
–          Administration would be centralized through OAPN staff

Please RSVP by Monday, November 11 at 3pm.

Performance: Ragamala Dance, 11am-12pm

Michael Kondziolka and Liz Stover have arranged for our members to attend a one-hour day performance of Ragamala Dance, led by Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy, Artistic Directors. The group is acclaimed as “one of the Diaspora’s leading Bharatanatyam ensembles that seamlessly carries the South Indian classical dance form into the 21st century.” Ragamala Dance has received numerous awards and recognition and this performance will not be one to miss.

Performance: Ragamala Dance: Sacred Earth, 7:30pm

If you are interested in staying in Ann Arbor for the full evening performance of Ragamala Dance, please contact Liz Stover at UMS for additional information.

Can a single stage transcend global barriers?

Choreographers Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy use the philosophy and myth of Indian traditions to explore the interconnectedness between humans and the landscapes that shape them. Accompanied by live music, the evening builds from silent, meditative beginnings to a thrilling crescendo as the performers surrender to the beauty of the sacred earth that has been given to us to safeguard, cherish, and pass on to future generations.

Sacred Earth’s choreography, ranging from contemplative to ecstatic, brings both internal (akam) and external (puram) landscapes to life through two ephemeral visual traditions — kolam floor designs and Warli wall paintings — creating a sacred space and becoming a link between the intimate home and the vastness of the outside world. Kolams are rice flour designs made each morning by women in southern India as conscious offerings to Mother Earth. The Warli people of western India revere the land and live in perfect coexistence with nature. Using their everyday lives as inspiration, they create dynamic wall paintings that find the spiritual in the everyday.

Sacred Earth reframes the cultural specificity of the Bharatanatyam dance tradition, bringing the eloquence of the form to universal themes in order to spark a global conversation.

Where does inspiration come from? What makes an artist tick? Join us for a post-performance Q&A and get a glimpse into the lives and minds of the artists that bring creativity to the stage. Must have a ticket to this evening’s performance to attend.

Coming to Michigan, Just for You
